  • Research topics

My research activities mainly concern evolutionary ecology with a particular interest for conservation biology. My main collaborators in the LEHNA are Sandrine Plénet, Odile Grolet, Thierry Lengagne, Jean-Paul Léna and Yann Voituron.

Within the scope of the evolution of adaptive strategies, I have been working on the cost-benefit balance of phenotypic plasticity options. The advantages of a plastic development in fluctuating and unpredictable environments have been highlighted through the study of paedomorphosis evolution in urodeles (Ichtyosaura alpestris) or inducible defences in anuran tadpoles (Rana dalmatina) (theses of Mathieu Denoël and Céline Téplitsky). Together with Sandrine Plénet, we have applied a similar approach to understand the evolutionary processes involved in the persistence of hybridogenesis in the hybridization complex of the water frogs, by focusing on a putative heterosis effect in hybrid frogs (theses of Alain Pagano and Laetitia Colon). This effect has never been found neither with respect to abiotic factors (hypoxia) nor to biotic ones (parasites) (master report of Brigitte Planade) suggesting that the success of the hybrids is only due to their higher fecundity.

We analysed the adaptation to unstable and unpredictable environments in the yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata) in comparing two habitat types, a wild one (rock pools at the bank of mountain rivers) and a man-made one (the ruts dug by timber engines in forests). We revealed the adaptive role of the interactions between longevity (iteroparity), dispersal and competition avoidance (these of Julian Pichenot and Hugo Cayuela).

Within the scope of conservation biology, I first performed a behavioural approach to understand how an amphibian perceives the landscape. With Nicolas Ray (Geneva) and Jean-Paul Léna, we then integrated this knowledge in modelling functional connectivity in actual landscapes by means of percolation models. This approach allowed the simulation of migration areas (these of Nadège Perret and Agnès Janin). Increasing the scale by using genetic data allowed the test of the barrier effect of transportation substructures on dispersal (Jérôme Prunier’s thesis).

Within the scope of biological invasions, I took advantage of large experimental devices built by the Pierre Vérots Fundation to test the impact of the introduction of the red-eared slider turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans) on the populations of the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) (Antoine Cadi’s thesis). This work contributed to the trade rules applied to these exotic turtles.

More recently, I worked together with Laurent Oxarango (LTHE, Grenoble) on the impact of climate change, and more particularly on water loss of soils, on the water balance of amphibians (Lissotriton helveticus) (Thomas Wardziak’s thesis). I am currently working on the impacts of climate changes at the scale of populations by analysing the long-term monitoring of a crested newt populations (Triturus cristatus) (Avril Weinbach’s master).
