image1voituronI try to understand the physiological mechanisms involved in the trade-offs organization between life history traits through three physiological processes that are the oxygen consumption, ATP production and the production of free radicals (Reactive Oxygen Species: ROS). While ATP is the chemical form of energy allocated to growth, survival and reproduction, the free radicals oxidize and thus affect many cellular components such as DNA, proteins and lipids. The ROS overproduction in the organism causes damage that are either reversible while requiring costly repairs in energy (ie restorative protein synthesis) or non-reversible and often deleterious (ie certain DNA mutations). Both types of damage influence the performance of individuals and therefore their fitness.
The involvement of mitochondrial performances and their impact is studied through internal changes (i.e. aging, disease); or external changes (environmental changes, including those induced by man). The models studied are predominantly ectothermic vertebrates (amphibians, Lepidosauriens) but also some invertebrates (insects).
