Plant strategies for controlling microorganisms in the soil nitrogen cycle by Japanese knotweed - Practical case of a super invasive!

Biological invasions are one of the major components of global change and their ecological impact on biodiversity is a particularly important subject. The invasibility of environments is a key axis of invasion ecology, both from a theoretical and an applied point of view. The « theory of fluctuating resource availability » postulates that a plant community becomes more vulnerable to invasions when the amount of unused resources increases. Invasive species of the Fallopia complex have particularly growth characteristics (i.e. high biomass production), and are known to biologically inhibit denitrification and potentially have effects on nitrification. These activities are two of the main microbial pathways of mineral nitrogen in soils. This work falls within the framework of multiple control of microbial activities in the nitrogen cycle of soils by the Fallopia model. The impact of the biotic and abiotic conditions of the environment on the modulation of the biological control of the microbial activities of the nitrogen cycle remains poorly understood. In addition, the spatio-temporal dynamics of the expression of the biological inhibition of denitrification by species of the Fallopia complex as well as the possible feedbacks on nitrification and the entire nitrogen cycle in soils (fixation, mineralization) have never been approached.
