  • Principaux résultats de recherche

    Mes travaux reposent sur les concepts d’écologie fonctionnelle (notion de groupe fonctionnel, organismes ingénieurs, espèces clés de voûte, biodiversité fonctionnelle) appliqués aux interfaces eau-sédiment quelles soient marines, lacustres ou d’eau courante (zone hyporhéique). Mes recherches sont principalement issues d’expérimentations de laboratoire en microcosmes permettant de déterminer les interactions complexes entre le milieu sédimentaire, les activités des invertébrés benthiques et les processus microbiens. L’ensemble de ces travaux ont permis de démontrer que :

    1/ La bioturbation (remaniement des sédiments, création de tubes et galeries) est le processus majeur par lequel les invertébrés influencent les processus biogéochimique dans des sédiments de cours d’eau (alors que l’importance de ce processus avait été essentiellement démontrée dans des systèmes lacustres ou marins).

    2/ Le concept de groupe fonctionnel de bioturbation peut s’appliquer aux invertébrés de la zone hyporhéique, le mode de bioturbation des invertébrés déterminant leur influence sur les processus biogéochimiques (respirations, dénitrification, processus fermentaires).

    3/ Les caractéristiques physiques (granulométrie, hydrodynamisme) et chimiques (quantité et qualité de la matière organique, présence de polluants) de l’interface déterminent l’influence de la bioturbation sur les processus microbiens.

    4/ Les interactions entre invertébrés bioturbateurs ont une influence significative sur le fonctionnement de l’interface sédimentaire.

    5/ Certaines espèces bioturbatrices peuvent être considérées comme des espèces clés de voute ou fonctionnellement dominantes car leurs influences masquent le rôle des autres espèces de la communauté.

    6/ La perturbation de l’interface sédimentaire hyporhéique par des dépôts de sédiments fins modifie le rôle joué par les communautés benthiques sur les processus biogéochimiques.

    Les points (3) et (6) m’ont amené à prendre en compte la variabilité du milieu dans l’étude du rôle de la bioturbation et de la diversité des organismes ingénieurs (ou organismes bioturbateurs). Ainsi, il a été possible de démontrer que la quantification du rôle des invertébrés dans les sédiments nécessite de définir une typologie des groupes fonctionnels en fonction de grands types d’habitat (milieu stagnant ou milieu d’eau courante, matrice sédimentaire fine ou grossière, charges variables en matière organique).

    Plus récemment, des travaux menés en collaboration avec Damien Lemoine (Equipe Ecologie des Communautés Végétales) ont concerné l’étude des interactions entre des organismes ingénieurs (vers tubificidés) et des macrophytes aquatiques. Les résultats ont montré un effet positif de l’oxygénation des sédiments par les vers tubificidés sur le développement des macrophytes. Alors que les interactions vers-plantes sont largement étudiées dans les sols, ce travail est l’un des premiers à démontrer l’influence significative des organismes ingénieurs sur les végétaux aquatiques.

    Afin d’établir une quantification plus fine des processus biogéochimiques aux interfaces eau-sédiment, mes recherches actuelles intègrent l’utilisation des isotopes stables (13C, 15N) afin de suivre le devenir du carbone et de l’azote dans les systèmes sédimentaires. Cette approche est possible à travers une collaboration avec l’UMR 5125 (PEPS) de l’Université Lyon 1. L’apport des isotopes stables de l’azote et du carbone me permet aussi d’intégrer dans mes thématiques de recherche actuelles le rôle trophique des invertébrés dans les écosystèmes aquatiques.
