Objects of study:
Alluvial wetlands and peatlands; Sediments and botanical macroremains; Pollution by metals (TMEs), persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and microplastics (MPs); Co-evolution of socio-ecosystems
Research Theme:
My research aims to better understand the evolution of wetlands facing to anthropogenic impacts and climate change over time. Two themes are studied: (1) the effect of developments (navigation, hydroelectricity, agriculture) and pollution (TMEs, POPs and MPs) on the sedimentary and ecological functioning of wetlands, (2) the spatio-temporal characterisation of the dispersion of cumulative pollution (cocktail effect) in socio-ecosystems, in connection with climate change. The temporal scale is mainly that of the Anthropocene (post-1945), with incursions into sometimes older periods (Holocene, Late-Glacial). Thanks to international collaborations, this research is carried out in several study areas based on an upstream-downstream approach, such as along the Rhône River and its tributaries (Ain, Gier, Saône Rivers) - which constitutes a natural laboratory, on the Loire basin (Dore valley, peat bogs of the Massif Central), and along the Severn River (United Kingdom). The research is mainly based on the study of sedimentary archives (grain-size, dating, magnetisation rates, pollutants, paleo-biodiversity) and on the coupling of this information with socio-environmental data (land-use, industrial history and polluted sites, issues of ecological transition, archaeology) using GIS (geographic information systems) and statistics.
